Leah is the Founder and CEO of Arbutus Health Limited, a company focused on the development of plant-derived medicines and products.
As a leader, educator and advocate in both the industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis industries in Ireland, Leah spearheaded the cultivation of over 120 acres of organic Irish hemp last year and operates a 10,000sqft pharmaceutical facility in the heart of Ireland.
She and her co-founder, James DeMello, founded Arbutus Health Limited in 2016 and began working toward opening up access to medical cannabis for Irish patients through education in Ireland and collaboration with industry leaders and patient advocates abroad.
In early 2019, Leah opened the ‘Arbutus Innovation Centre’, a contract research organisation in Athlone, dedicated to the development and production of plant-based products and technologies. The centre boasts 10,000ft2 of state-of-the-art clean-rooms, laboratories, offices and warehousing. The centre facilitates research, advisory services, intellectual property development, cross-jurisdictional product registrations and turnkey manufacturing solutions.
Leah’s team are launching a luxury wellness brand, ‘deDanú’ on March 15th, 2020. deDanú’s focus is the role organic extracts play in skincare regimes and ultimately as approved medical applications. deDanú was born with a goal to support rural Irish communities by using locally sourced ingredients that are grown organically while supporting biodiversity. deDanú is poised to meet the growing market demand for luxurious sustainable products and reusable packaging that incorporate circular manufacturing solutions.
Leah is also the Executive Director of the Ireland-Canada Medical Cannabis Alliance and works to support policy development, education and patient access with the help of Canadian expertise and Irish stakeholders.
