Advertorial: The reality of medical cannabis access in Ireland today
During the summer 2019, Minister for Health Simon Harris signed legislation which will allow for the operation of the medical cannabis access programme in Ireland on a pilot basis for five years. “The purpose of this programme is to facilitate compassionate access to cannabis for medical reasons, where conventional treatment has failed,” he said. It allows a medical consultant to prescribe a listed cannabis-based treatment for a patient for the following medical conditions: spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis; intractable nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy; and severe, refractory (treatment-resistant) epilepsy.
For years, families have fought for this programme to be established, including Waterford family who were accessing medicinal cannabis in the Netherlands, at a cost of €9,000 a year, but the substantial cost is impossible for the family to maintain.
8 months after the legislation, Europe Canna Expo is coming to Dublin with the Medical Cannabis Conference to explore the reality of the medicinal cannabis access in Ireland. The conference is to be held on 3-4th March at the Shelbourne Hotel, 27 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin.
This is an exciting conference for patients, advocates, sector professionals and others interested in learning from those at the heart of the cannabis industry – from cultivators, licensed producers working to grow and develop treatments, those working to import and ensure access through pharmacies, and from North American and European doctors prescribing life-changing treatments.
